Viewing Post Event Imagery

Updated on

Dexter Hurricane provides post event imagery to provide more awareness and insight into the damage and impact associated with a tropical storm or hurricane.

In this section, we'll discuss the capabilities and how to access hurricane post event imagery.

Accessing Post Event Imagery

First, let's navigate to Dexter Hurricane.

Upon logging into Dexter, Tracker is the default page that displays when the product is launched.

To access Dexter Hurricane, select the down arrow next the word Tracker in the header. This will provide a list of the other sub-products available. In this case, you will select Hurricane.

To access post event imagery, you must first select a storm.

For demonstration purposes, let's select Hurricane Michael from 2018.

Once a storm is selected, you'll notice a new tool (highlighted below) will display along the right side of the map.

This tool will have a "layer" icon and will display the text "View Post Event Imagery" when you hover.

Select the View Post Event Imagery tool button.

Post event imagery may not be available for all storms or for all users. If post event imagery is not available, the Post Event Imagery tool button will not display. If you have questions about accessing imagery for a storm, please contact your Athenium Analytics account representative.

Imagery Options

Dexter Hurricane provides two imagery options:

Nearmap Post Event Imagery

NOAA Post Event Imagery - less granular imagery, more widespread coastline coverage

First, let's investigate the Nearmap Post Event Imagery for Hurricane Michael

The Nearmap imagery is super high-resolution, providing a granular view of the impact and damage associated with the selected hurricane. The coverage is typically more focused and delivery may take slightly longer than the NOAA post event imagery.

Once you select "Nearmap Post Event," you'll see a red box show up on the map. This box is a guide to indicate the locations where post event imagery is available for the selected storm.

To view the post event imagery, simply zoom in within the red box. Areas where imagery is available  will be highlighted in gray, as shown below near Panama City, FL.

Continue to zoom in to investigate the desired location.

Let's investigate the post event imagery in Mexico Beach, FL (shown below).

The NOAA imagery is less granular than the Nearmap post event imagery, but it does provide a medium resolution view of the impact and damage, and typically covers a more widespread area and is available sooner.

Once you select "NOAA Post Event," all areas with post event imagery available will become shaded on the map (as shown below).

To view the post event imagery, simply zoom in within the shaded areas.

Zooming in on Mexico Beach, FL gives us the imagery shown below.

If you'd like more details about the post event imagery, for Nearmap or NOAA, select the Imagery Information button.

This will provide details such as resolution and the date(s) of imagery collection.
