Observed Storm Reports

Updated on

Dexter Tracker's observed storm reports provide thunderstorm related reports compiled from the National Weather Service.

Observed storm reports are available for hail, tornado, and wind events.

Viewing Observed Storm Reports in Tracker

To view observed storm reports, select the "eye" icon from the toolbar on the right side of the map.

Observed storm reports will populate the map as separate layer than the Dexter Tracker's peril tracks, shown below, overlaying a May 1, 2018 hail storm.

The observed reports legend provides a color key as well as a count of storm reports for each peril.

Hovering the cursor over a single observed storm report will reveal the storm report's:

  • Peril
  • Location
  • Timestamp
  • Available Damage Information

If you wish to filter which observed storm reports are displayed on the map, simply select the peril you wish to disable in the observed reports legend.

The image below shows the same day and storm with all tornado observed reports disabled. Note the tornado observed reports disappear from the map and the tornado peril in the legend is now grayed out.

Observed storm reports are updated hourly, but if there was no observed report for an event, or it arrived to the NWS more than 10 days after the event, the report will not show up in Dexter Tracker.

The observed storm reports list should be considered preliminary and may not contain all severe weather reports for any particular event.

Additionally, NWS storm surveys may be needed to confirm tornadoes and determine if the reported damage was from a tornado or a non-tornadic wind event.

To remove all observed storm reports from the map, simply select the "eye" icon to disable all reports.
