Selecting a Storm & Perils

Updated on

Dexter Hurricane allows you to specify weather data for the relevant perils for a selected hurricane or tropical storm.

Dexter Hurricane collects and accumulates data on rainfall, sustained winds, wind gusts, tornadic storm activity and storm surge exceedance for each available storm.

In this section, we'll discuss how to use and navigate through Dexter Hurricane.

Accessing Dexter Hurricane

Upon logging into Dexter, Tracker is the default page that displays when the product is launched.

To access Dexter Hurricane, select the down arrow next the word Tracker in the header. This will provide a list of the other sub-products available. In this case, you will select Hurricane.

Selecting a Storm

To see the list of available storms, select the down arrow in the "Select a Storm" box.

Not all tropical storms or hurricanes will be available within Dexter Hurricane.

For demonstration purposes, let's select Hurricane Michael from 2018.

Selecting a Peril

Once you have selected a storm, you may choose a peril to investigate. The perils available for each storm within Dexter Hurricane are:

  • Rainfall
  • Sustained Wind
  • Wind Gust
  • Tornadic Storm
  • Storm Surge

In order to investigate a peril, you must first select a storm.

Rain will display the total accumulated rainfall associated with the selected hurricane.

Sustained Wind will display the highest recorded sustained wind speeds, experienced by a location, associated with the selected hurricane.

Wind Gust will display the highest recorded wind gust wind speeds, experienced by a location, associated with the selected hurricane.

Tornadic Storm will display the radar derived tracks for any tornadic storm activity associated with the selected hurricane.

Surge will display the probabilistic maximum storm surge over the event using storm surge 50% exceedance height estimates.
