Plotting Exposures

Updated on

Overlaying your exposures over Dexter Tracker's high-resolution peril visualizations empowers you to achieve better event response and exposure management.

In this section, we will discuss how to plot exposures within Dexter Tracker.

How To Plot Exposures

To begin, let's track a storm.

For this example, let's track a severe hailstorm near San Antonio, Texas from April 12, 2016.

For help tracking a storm in Dexter Tracker, go to our Tracking a Storm user guide.

Now that you have tracked the storm, select the blue EXPOSURES box at the bottom left of the page to view exposures.

Step 1: Policy Data Selection

Dexter provides 3 options for selecting policy data:

  • To view exposures for properties that are integrated within Dexter, select My Insured Locations.
  • To view exposures for common land units (CLU) that are integrated within Dexter, select           My Common Land Units
  • If you do not have policy data integrated within Dexter, select Manual Location Upload to upload a file of your insured locations.

For users that do not have policy data integrated within Dexter, the only option that will display is Manual Location Upload.

Manual Location Upload

To upload a file of insured locations, select Manual Location Upload, then Select File.

Once the file is uploaded, Dexter will prompt you to choose which fields from your file will represent the following values:

  • Header
  • Subheader
  • Body
  • Latitude
  • Longitude
  • Unique Identifier

Once you have selected all fields, select DONE.

The latitude and longitude are required to pinpoint the location of the exposure.

The header, subheader, and body entries can be used to add pertinent information about the exposure.

An example of the output is included below.

Step 2: Exposure Search Options

For users that have policy data integrated, Dexter allows you to search for exposures using a Radius or Polygon.

Radius

Dexter will plot all exposures within a circle, using the radial distance from a specific point that you select.

Workflow:

  1. Select the Radius option (the box will illuminate in blue once selected)
  2. Select a center point by selecting a location from the map
  3. Select a radius (between 1-20 miles)
  4. Select DONE.
  5. Dexter will draw the circle and import exposures.

To adjust the size of the circle or remove exposures from the map, select the "x" within the blue box at the top left of the screen.

Polygon

Dexter will plot all exposures within a polygon that you draw.

Workflow:

  1. Select the Polygon option (the box will illuminate in blue once selected)
  2. Select a point on the map to begin adding boundaries to your polygon.
  3. Continue to select points to add boundaries to your polygon.
  4. Double click on the final point to complete the shape and import exposures.

To adjust the shape of the polygon or remove exposures from the map, select the "x" within the blue box at the top left of the screen.
